The Bristal Assisted Living at Lake Grove recently transformed into a technological time capsule and hosted an immersive exhibition that transported residents and local seniors through the journey of mobile communication technology.

John Stallone, curator of the Long Island Telephone Museum in Commack, guided attendees through the history of cellular technology on the 52nd anniversary of the world’s first cellphone call.

On April 3, 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper placed the historic call from a Manhattan street corner. This marked the beginning of an era that would reshape human interaction as we knew it. Cooper’s device, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, weighing 4.4 pounds and carried a price tag of $4,000 when it finally reached consumers in 1983, equivalent to $12,814.54 in today’s currency.

Many residents of The Bristal at Lake Grove witnessed this technological revolution throughout their lives, some as young teenagers when Cooper made his groundbreaking call, others as professionals beginning careers in a world on the cusp of unimaginable change.

Stallone’s exhibition featured many communication milestones, including the groundbreaking Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, a vintage 1950s rotary car phone, the business-changing Blackberry, the first iPhone, pioneering flip phone models including the iconic MicroTac and StarTac, and even a briefcase model that required its own dedicated carrying case.
